Be Disturbed

Are you ready? Are you ready to be disturbed? This past Sunday I stood in church and read a confession written by Sir Francis Drake. I usually hate history, but I love confessions of wise people from long ago.

Drake was England’s most famous sailor and explorer. In the late 1800s he penned this prayer that was found later in his ship’s journal:

Untitled by adam.watts
Disturb us, Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves, when our dreams have come true, because we have dreamed too little, when we arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore. Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we possess, we have lost our thirst for the waters of life; having fallen in love with life, we have ceased to dream of eternity, and in our efforts to build a new earth, we have allowed our vision of the new Heaven to dim. Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture on wider seas, where storms will show your mastery; where losing sight of  land, we shall find the stars. We ask You to push back the horizons of our hopes; and to push into the future in strength, courage, hope, and love.”

This riled me up on Sunday. It riled me up again just now as I typed it out. My heart is stirred, and as one blog commenter posted, “the spirit is on the move.” I prayed last week that if you weren’t stepping out in faith, that you would be bothered

Now I’m praying that you’d not just be bothered, but that you’d be disturbed.

When we are too well pleased with ourselves and the abundance of things we possess, we need storms that will show God's majesty. I am bursting with excitement over the ways the Lord has been teaching me this lesson. I can't wait to share it with you.

Tomorrow I dare more boldly and venture on wider seas. The entire appearance of the blog changes. I'm pumped. New look. New blog. New regular and frequent posts that you can depend on. New and fresh ways that God is moving in me and hopefully in you.

Won’t you join me? Tomorrow?
  • Let’s study the word of God together. Tomorrow I begin a series on faith from the book of Hebrews.
  • Let's pray together. Let’s go boldly before the throne of grace and ask the Lord to push back the horizons of our hopes and push us into the the future in strength, courage, hope, and love.
  • Let's encourage one another. I want to hear about tangible ways that God is increasing your faith, in your walk, right where you are.
Join me as we seek God through the study of his word and the ways he is encouraging us to take individual steps of faith. Be disturbed, be very disturbed.

  3. It's prayers like this that both scare and excite me because I know by faith that God will answer. I look forward to seeing what he stirs in you.

  4. Oh girl. You aren't the only one. I've got to put my big girl britches on every day and ask him use his perfect love to cast out the fear that comes with taking the scary steps of faith. The excitement and his love are what keeps me trucking.
